For turning on the device: turn it on before the device reaches "Fully Charged" state and you be good. Booting up the system eats the top left corner of your battery (literally) no matter if unplugged a second ago or an hour. My battery readings tell 89-96% right after the phone tells it is done with charging and remains 12h at 0% before it dies. I love precision!
the bug was a bit useless because of how li ion stuff works...

There have been reports of routers that don't work well with WiFi power management. A temporary fix until you get a new router might be to turn off power saving for that connection on the N900. Look under Settings->Connections. Click your home connection then Edit. Hit next a couple of times until you get to the last screen and then click Advanced, then the Other tab where you can disable power saving.

This will of course drain your N900 battery more quickly, but it might allow it to connect to your router.

if i am not completely mistaken, that is solely a cosmetic issue, ie the new, actual value needs to be recalculated which takes a while.
charging information available via that bme stuff is rather crappy, compared to the amount of information other (yes, even li-ion powered) devices offer to the user.
