root is the base of the entire folder structure. Hence the name root. Root is at the root of the phone.

Why, what do you want to do / know?

Note that there may also be a misconception - the default file manager doesn't show the entire directory structure, just the relevant part. This is in order to keep inexperienced users from messing up with the file system.

The '/' directory is the real root, and '/home/user/MyDocs' is what you see in the file manager and mass storage mode.

You can easily access the real root directory with root access after installing the rootsh package. An easy way to do so is to run Midnight Commander (mc command) in a root terminal.

Maybe u guys can HElp ! me !
I have downloaded all I need and done everything like it says ,but I dont know why it doesnt work !!! Xterm didn't show any erros too !!

    * On your N900 open the web browser and goto http://repository.maemo.org/
    * Click on install next to "Fremantle Extras-Deval" which is half way down the page (WARNING - Do not install unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing and have fully read and understood the above information from qgil)
    * Give it a few seconds and it should load up the application manager, click on add and it should update the catalogue automatically
    * Goto the games sub-menu and find ioquake3 and install it
    - If you get an error installing and it asks for "Libgles1-sgx-img", it is because you have disabled some of the other repositories, make sure you keep the default ones enabled all the time!!
    * Connect your N900 to the PC in mass storage mode and make a folder called "baseq3" in the root directory and then copy the *.pk3 files from your Quake 3 CD into it.
    * In X-Terminal type the following (this should show a list of files about 4 files/folders):

    Quote
    ls /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/

    * In x-Terminal type the following to move the files to the hidden folder:

    Quote
    mv /home/user/MyDocs/baseq3/* /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/

    * In X-Terminal type the following (this should now show the *.pk3 files):

    Quote
    ls /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/

Everything should now work fine, so just load up Quake 3 and it should work straight away.
(When it asks for the CD Key just press the enter key twice)

you have to put the baseq3 folder just into your mydocs.connect your phone to your pc.then drop the folder into your n900.then make these steps but try to be root(type sudo gainroot in xterm)if nothing happens install rootsh from the repositorys.after that>

    sudo gainroot

    ls /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/

    * In x-Terminal type the following to move the files to the hidden folder:

    Quote
    mv /home/user/MyDocs/baseq3/* /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/

    * In X-Terminal type the following (this should now show the *.pk3 files):

    Quote
    ls /home/user/.q3a/baseq3/

then reboot your phone and it should work if not then just forget it

you really should remove the devel repository if you are done with this

it says you should only install is when you know exactly what you're doing
    that is for a reason
