The on-screen keyboard has some issues (at least for me)

I managed to open the xterm, and looked around the system. I found that vi was available. I tried it and could'nt get out of it.

How does one execute a control-j or an escape (Esc) using the on-screen keyboard?

hmm. 2nd Question. Where is the layout for the on-screen keyboard defined (when in doubt remap the keyboard to match my usage)

Escape is the counterclockwise arrow (physical) button on the left side of the unit. The combo ':q' (i.e. colon-q) or ':q!' will quit VI, and ';wq' if you want to save the edits you made. Not sure about control-characters yet.

I wonder if xmodmap works on the touchscreen keyboard?

One of the amusing things I noticed about the keyboard is that with the autocompletion on it tells you (and anyone watching) what your passwords are as you type them in. Oops....

ahah I feel less embarrased now, I´m not the only one
I also had some 'strange' behaviour with control caracters but had not a lot of time to investigate on this

in vi, I had tried to add characters. I thought I had tried each of the physical buttons, but couldn't get out of Insert mode.

I'll try again. otherwise I'll be stuck using EX only...

if this works, i'll try emacs (even it's a remote execution on local x-display)

thanks...

[Somebody else explained the Esc already.] Doesn't your osso-xterm have a 'ctrl' in the list of shortcuts to the right? If not, select Edit and Shortcuts and enable it there. Then just hit ctrl and then any key (e.g. j)

Well, I don't find it really amusing: I noticed that the autocompletion of everything you type persists between sessions, so it is stored somewhere.
I'm not really comfortable having my ssh keyring passphrase stored anywhere, much less on a portable device.
Is there a way to delete the autocompletion cache and then only disable it for xterm?

XTerm really needs to pick up the "echo off" character from the remote box, and use that to turn the auto-completion off temporarily.

Yes, i have disabled the auto word completion on mine. Go into the control panel and under the Personalzation choose the "Text input settings" and there are 3 tabs that give you different options to change. This is on an N800, not sure about the 770.

Yes, I know how to disable word completion globally, but I'd like to keep it and disable it only when using xterm. Also, I'd like to know how to delete the already stored words (passwords).

Oh, I see your point now, that is a good idea. This sounds doable, I'll tinker around with this and post if I stumble on anything interesting. Next time i"ll try to read the posts more carefully.
