Hi,

Nokia offers free maps for navigation for a family of gsm phones
http://europe.nokia.com/A4509295

http://europe.nokia.com/A4509362

What makes Nokia not to offer the same free NokiaMaps for Nokia 770/ Nokia 800 and to offer not-free Navicore product maps for navigation ?

What is a chance to use free NokiaMaps on Nokia 770 / Nokia 800 in near future ?

Maemo mapper makes Nokia 770/ Nokia 800 really hot product.
Nokia 770/ Nokia 800 is not GSM phone, has no camera, has slow processor,
has no built-in gps receiver,
has tricky mmc memory cards, built in mono speaker (Nokia 770) only
Outdoor WiFi is ok, but needs free hotspot access coverage.
Second-hand market value is about $100,
I see no manufacturer's support,
so why not to offer free NokiaMaps as already offered to a family of Nokia gsm phones ?

I don't like to feel as a second-category (lower- category) user of Nokia made product.

It's the developer of maemo mapper, who makes Nokia 770 still a hot product.
But to develop maemo mapper into real car navigation product
its developer deserves co-financing from business sector.

Individual donations can't finance his highly valuable and appreciated full-time work.

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed a day or two ago. The problem is that it's for a different os. Those products are for Nokia's Symbian os.

Ok, thanks.
Different os is an issue.
But maps alone are still map tiles, image files.
Does it mean maps for symbian can't be for good for use by maemo mapper ?
Google maps, Google Earth images, tiles , were also not intended for tablett
but work fine.
Can't you extract map tiles only from free NokiaMaps and use by maemo mapper
not today but mayby next week ?.

What you see on a screen under symbian, debian, xp windows or another os
is still image file, map tile/s.

I don't ask you to extract map tiles from free NokiaMaps intended for symbian os, but what is a chance for Nokia to do that job for sad and unhappy users of Nokia 770 and Nokia 800 tabletts ?

One more reason I believe the next logical step for Maemo is to emulate S60 in some way. Nokia is treading softly around the interoperability of it's Nseries devices these days. If the N800 was truly an Nseries device, it would at least play video recorded on other Nseries devices right?

Why don't we just request Nokia Maps port if we want it so badly. That would be a real killer app, atleast for them who have bluetooth gps receiver ;-). Yeah i know we have already Navicore but it's too expensive.

jmk, thanks to the link to my blog.

However, note that the linked post refers to improvements in the "SDK and development platform". Nokia Maps is a bit off topic in this context.

I'd rather point to http://maemo.org/intro/roadmap.html (see "Proposing new features"). As recommended previously here in ITT, if you want maemo/Nokia do something, a good start is to go to maemo/Nokia and tell us.

Nokia Maps and most other SatNav applications do not use map tiles, they use maps that are in a compressed format for easy route planning, and involve no images. This process is normally unique for each program to protect the copyright of the map owners to prevent map sharing.

To create such a program for any OS / Hardware takes a lot of time and money (plus paying the map owner a lot of money to license the maps) - to do this for free is very very rare. Nokia can only provide Nokia Maps for free as they hope a large number of users will buy the voice navigation on top. The alternative, and more conventional pricing model is to charge a set amount to each user - and this is what Navicore has done for the 770 / N800.

Ok. You are right.
But routing has nothing to do with free NokiaMaps.
They are offered free at both for no-route and on-route options.
What they charge is a routing fee.
So it makes really no sense to assume Nokia hopes Nokia 770/ 800 users
won't buy the voice navigation or at a percenrtage much loower than owners of a family of Nokia phone products, NokiaMaps are already offered for free.

Are you aware of any market research study done in support of your assumptions ?
In contrary, I am sure, more Nokia 770/800 would be interested to pay for route service and use free NokiaMaps , gtting much more popular as a SatNav product than a product offered by Navicore.

So what makes Nokia to assume Nokia 770/800 users show interest in highquality satnav to a lesser extend than users of other Nokia products, free NokiaMaps are offered ?

Nokia 770/800 has a larger screen than gps phones and in my opinion
satvan with Nokia 770/800 should be a flag product offered by Nokia.

Ok.
And again.
So why Navicore is not ported to symbian and offered at fee to users of a family of gps/gsm phones , generating more profit than free NokiaMaps ?

Ok.
And finally.
I can buy another product by Nokia - gsm gps phone for use with free NokiaMaps and paid routing but I would prefer Nokia 770/800 for use
as a viewer to maps and navigation.

Is it possible (in near future) to have Nokia 770/800 to login into gsm gps enabled Nokia phone and act as a diplay to a remote gsm gps Nokia phone ?
I am aware of porting issues but would like to use free NokiaMaps and pay routing fee.

Why no free NokiaMaps for Nokia 800 ? Because Nokia maps business model is to sell routing information and turn by turn instructions downloaded from the cellular network while you are in your car. And the N800 does not have wifi access while you are in your car...

There's no such think as a free lunch (or map, in that case...).
