there are two scripts
/opt/maemocjk/usr/bin/imdefault
and
/opt/maemocjk/usr/bin/imscim
and I use them
to disable / enable mscim without uninstalling anything
try them

I've uninstalled mscim many times and used --purge to bring back vkb without any problem.

I had the same problem. I fixed it by following the instructions posted in Comment no. 14 in: https://code.google.com/p/scim-for-m...s/detail?id=23
---
"1. Download rootsh
2. open a web browser and come to this current page.
3. open your X-terminal
4. type -> sudo gainroot
5. copy and paste -> rm -f /etc/event.d/scim
6. copy and paste -> /usr/bin/gtk-query-immodules-2.0 > /etc/gtk-2.0/gtk.immodules
7. Off and on your phone again.
This is what I've done to make my virtual keyboard work again. (I am using PR 1.2)
After step 5 and 6, there is nothing that will appear to show you that smth is actually being done, so just continue.. I hope it will clear some of your doubt and make ur phone work again.

I have just created a status menu switcher applet, which allows on-the-fly enabling/disabling of MSCIM (no rebooting).
This will save your battery life greatly, and also allows you to use the onscreen keyboard and symbol menu again!
It still has a few rough edges, but will probably be helpful to most people not requiring MSCIM to be active constantly.
Read this thread carefully, and then download the package if you wish to try it.
All usual warnings apply!! I will not be responsible if your device requires reflashing afterwards, etc.

The best way to save face is to keep the lower half shut
