4. So-so: the design isn't exciting, but it's not too bad.

I'd rather see the software UI redesigned before they redesign the hardware styling (though no one said it's just one-or-the-other).

I prefer the 770 to the 800 styling wise, but either are ok.

Now that's an interesting thought. It very well may turn out that all the hardware needed is already inside the current N800 and just needs to be revealed through firmware. It was a while before anyone knew about the FM radio inside, right?

I don't know if something like that would pass through the FCC so easily.
But I've used software-defined radios before in the desert...they're pretty damn neat.
Nothing like driving around jamming everything in a huge range.

In Las Vegas back in January (Where the N800 was introduced, BTW.), Sprint reportedly used an N800 to demonstrate the features of WiMAX.

I wasn't there so it wasn't clear to me me if this was a live demo or if those who reported were referring to an artist's rendering used in presentations...

Well, now that we know how possible it is, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how probable it is.

It will still take a good part of next year for the Sprint WiMAX roll out to gain steam, and I'm all for "futureproof" devices, but I'm hoping that there will be some new hardware other then the WiMAX "enabled" N800. It would be good if the current N800 hardware is capable of WiMAX connectivity as the price would be even better when the time comes for it, but I don't see anything that 1ups the aging N800 before end of year, I'll be diverting funds to something less "futureproof" instead.

Until then, the wait shall resume.

The European N95 doesn't have support for the US 3G frequencies in it (it has all the 2G GSM frequencies, so should still work for some form of roaming). Equally, I have no idea if the new US version has support for the European 3G frequencies either, or whether you can't yet buy a decent 3G smartphone for worldwide usage...

Not realy an answer to when the new firmware will be here (because I don't know). But I had some issues with my Apple airport basestation. Got solved when i upgraded to latest firmware and changed from "WPA/WPA2 personnal" to "WPA2 personnal" Can't say i know why this is the case, but now it all runs smoothly without any problems.

How about a little bit o' that 802.11N action :\, It picks it up, but it certainly won't connect with PSK TKIP, and even on Wide, it doesn't pick up the best signal, but a device further away can pick up 90%.
