Hej together,

just got my N900 this week and I am really happy about it and already very much appreciated the support I got here. Thanks for that.

One thing I couldn't figure out yet is how the arrow keys of the german keyboard layout behave in the terminal app. Left and right work fine, but the one thing you really need in a terminal is the up-arrow, which would be reachable by Fn+Left-arrow, which just won't work. All other Fn combinations work fine, but not that one. So I can switch to the english layout and then have my uparrow at the Ä-key...

So is there a solution of either getting the up-arrow work or switching to the english keyboard layout and back without going the long way to settings -> "Texteingabe" (text input) to switch the layout?

Thanks a lot

Hm, no one any idea or hint?

Is this more likely an application bug of the terminal rather than one of the system?

Two things.. try the swedish keyboard.. if you have an Ä above the left key then it might be close to the german.

You would also like to install Bash if you havent... stock you will only get 15 rows history. With Bash you will get unlimited, ctrl+r and other familiar things that stock lacks.

Hmm... strange. It works for me using the Fn-Button and Left or Right to get the up or down key in the Terminal.

And one more useful combination: I use Strg + I to get the Tab Key.

hej,

thanks for the replies. Seems my problem is related to this one:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6623

just googled me a workaround, looking as follows:

creating a file named .profile in homedirectory containing

setxkbmap us
trap "setxkbmap de; exit" 0

this will switch to us layout as soon as I start the terminal and switch back to the german when exiting.

So now uparrow is on "ä", just have to remember where all the other keys are...

hm, I installed bash3 from testing and ran bash-setup, but ctrl+r doesn't work as expected...

//update
I had to manually add "/bin/bash" into my .profile, so now I have bash functionality, but the history is empty every time I start a shell

@Helmuth Strg+I is great :-) and I just discovered that, at least now, the up and down arrows work as long as you keep the Fn-key pressed while using them...I was pretty sure I already tried that

Ok, after skipping all this with the ".profile", changing the default bash in /etc/passwd and deleting the ".bashhistory" once everything works like a dream now!

Thanks a lot you two!
