Not even close.
A real solution to this is a remote smb or cifs mount that you could then use as if they were local files. Now, just to find some site willing to give out free samba share storage space(and bandwidth)

yep, i can only get 120K/s or so in ssh/scp over an 802.11g LAN connection.
