I would say: If you have to ask. It's fake!

One fake that I've seen has Nokia Nseries printed in white on the back cover and the camera lens cover has the info embossed. Apart from that, one good way to detect a fake is to try and find x-term in the menu.
That's why I wrote "If it runs Maemo 5 it's probably an N900"...

I don't see how they would make Maemo run on a device which doesn't have the exact same hardware as the N900 (a big part of Maemo is closed source).

I've seen many fakes, usually they got TV tunning functionality and accept two SIMs at once, but the guts are actually running Symbian or some knock off of it

The funny thing about the ebay warning is that many of the features listed as giveaways that it's a phony are features that N900 users would really like to have.

Indeed, but those features aren't worth giving up all the stuff only the real N900 offers

You guys don't actually think that these fake devices do what they claim to do, do You?

(that's a lot of do's in one line).

What if my N900 misses the "Designed in Finland" label? (Otherwise the Nokia site accepts my IMEI as valid.)

So wait... there's no real way to find out the life of a N900? I seriously thought that was added in Maemo 5.

Learn something new each day.
