I didn't think Orb had a Linux client.

Anyways, I'd rather an open source solution.

Likely it doesn't... My home PC has WinXP...

I told that I'm missing something obvious!

Indeed, the main reasons, as zerojay said: open source and Linux-based.

In addition:
  • GUI-less operation (probably with web-based configuration) so it can run on my headless server
  • RSS transcoding (which you mention)
  • Freevo FXD and MythTV DB parsing for additional metadata
  • Video Center config files for easy installation on N800
  • Entirely under your control: no signups on external websites.

But otherwise, yes, it looks a bit like Orb.

Andrew, let me know if you need help testing your app. I think I've got a pretty good stress/torture test as I've got about 3.5TB of videos on my Linux box at home. Not sure anyone else would push it more than I would.

Thanks Zerojay for the info on VideoCenter, and the link to the update. After the firmware update yesterday, it wouldn't load, so I figured there was an updater in the works. Well, I have just updated, thinking it would solve the problem, but alas, it still just doesn't load. I get the little 'loading' window, then it just goes away and nothing happens.

Has this happened to anyone else? It looks like others are using it w/no trouble.

BTW I was not able to install MicroB...think there's a connection?

Did you install all four needed packages?

I just noticed that since a few bugs have been fixed, its practical to use this as a podcasting client. I added all my podcast feeds as services and marked them all as read. Now when a new podcast comes out it automatically appears after hitting the update button. I can then download it and listen to it offline. Hurray!

It happened to me with the former version of VC. At the beginning it wouldn't start. I tried running from the terminal too, but got an error I can't remember now.
Then.. I think.. uhm.. I've restarted the tablet and it worked.

Anyway I think I tried two things: restart the tablet or remove the videocenter folder from the memory card.

Try and let us know.

Anidel, thanks for your prompt reply. It worked! I did both, removed the VC folder and rebooted. Voila! And, Media player works now!
