Does anyone have any experience connecting the 800 too the Sprint network using the Treo 700p? I have Power Vision but no PAM. I have been able to connect my laptop with a Sanyo phone using the #777 dial. Can this also be done using the N800 and a Treo 700p?

If so, I would appreciate some instructions. Generally, I would use hotspots, but occasionally, I need to do a quick check on email when traveling on the road. A PAM is too costly to justify for the infrequent use I want.

No problem getting it to work with my Treo 755p. Well...maybe "no problem" is being generous. It took me a few tries to figure out the steps.

1. Make bluetooth connection between n800 and phone. Be sure to first make the Treo "visible" in it's Bluetooth menu. You only have to do this the first time...after that you can force the connection without the Treo broadcasting. On the n800 use the Control Panel's Bluetooth menu. Choose "Devices" from this menu and it will search for and find the Treo. You will see the name of your Treo. Add n800 to your list of trusted devices on Treo using the 4 number key that the n800 provides. This just establishes the connection...you still have to define it on the n800 as a phone data connection.

3. After the Treo has connected go into the n800 control panel and pick "Connectivity." From there pick "Connections"...."New." Create a new connection called something like "Treo" or "700p" and choose "Data call." as the type. For the dial-up number use #777. For the name and password use your Sprint Power Vision name and password (not the same as you account password.) I saw someone post that they didn't need to enter the name and password (left it blank) but I never got it to work before entering it (though it could have been a half a dozen other mistakes that prevented my connection.)

4. Exit Connectivity and go back to the home screen. Click on the little world in the upper right and choose "connect" or "change connection" if you are already connected. The n800 will scan for connections. I made the kept the Treo BT visible for the first time but I'm not sure that is necessary. One of the connections it will find will be the new Treo phone connection you created. Pick it and it should connect. The first time I did it, it took several attempts before it connected. Now it connects without hesitation.

When you connect you will see the BT logo on the treo switch to a little laptop. On the n800 you will see the little connection indicator with a phone overlayed on it.

I've really like the ability to get online where wifi networks aren't available. The browser on the n800 is much better than Blazer...more compatible, and more robust.

Hope that helps. Let me know how far you get.

I use the method that doesnt require the number or password. Basically goto treocentral.com there is a small patch to apply to your phone so that using PAM isnt detected.

As for connecting it to the N800 when i first setup the connection I just selected sprint and it didnt require anything else.

I use the patch as well. Here is a link to instructions and the patch.

Forgot about the Sprint choice. I used that on the 770 but created a new connection for the n800.

One caveat. Since I installed the patch my Treo has been much less stable. I've had more spontaneous resets in the last week than in the two months before.

Thank you very much for the excellent responses. This did the trick for getting me connected from my N800 to my Treo 700p and then to the Internet. I wish it I could also get my laptop connected this way. I am going to try using the cable next for the laptop.

I do have one significant problem now, though. My Treo no longer communicates via Power Vision. Frankly, I would rather use the N800 for stuff like email but News on the Treo is really cool. I followed the instructions to change my passwork for Power Vison. Later my Treo said it had to update PowerVision. So, I let it do it's thing. I think that reset the password to something else. So, I set it to the one I selected to test the password and it no longer communicates.

I may need to go back to SprintPCS and change my PW again and see what happens. But, I know I will have to go through the set up on the N800 again, also.

I guess I have more time on my hands than I thought. I fooled around with the N800, Treo and my laptop and have everything working fantastically. Actually, some things work better using the Treo as a modem than using my WiFi connection.

I was able to change back to an earlier setting for the Treo Networks (it was just the luck of the draw because most of the connections have the same name). This got my Power Vision working again. Then I connected to the Treo from the N800 without using any username or PW. It WORKED.

I had previously introduced the Hack you talk about in the articles above.

Then I also downloaded a nice little program for my Treo called PDANet. This allowed me to connect my laptop using the Treo as a Modem via my Sync Cable. I am not sure where it connected though because this software is not Sprint specific. I suspect it may have gone into a dial up somewhere using my minutes. I will need to research this more.

Still later I set up a connection using my laptop via Bluetooth. It is also working.

Life is GOOD! Well --- better wait to see what Sprint does!

Hmmmm...you shouldn't need PDAnet once you've got the hack installed to connect to your laptop. I haven't set that up yet myself but will give it a go in the next few days and can report the steps involved if you need them.
