Yeah, that logic sucks too - there are countries/operators where nokia doesn't offer NM on the phone at all, which would not be the case if wifi usage was free & unmetered. Nokia want to partner with operators to give/sell you NM. For nokia, that adds a bit of stickiness to their brand (cos you've become dependant on nokia for your email access) and makes operators more likely to choose Nokia handsets to badge. For the operator, it is a way to up the revenue per user in return for a perceived value add.

Your data plan analagy isn't quite right - as in the case of NM your data plan (or PAYG charges) wouldl still cover the packet data costs of your NM usage over cellular network, so still no real justification for an additional charge for NM access via your operator data network - it still neds to be justified by its value add as an account aggregator and its push capability.

not getting at you BTW, it's the Nokia model that's a bit confusing, not your attempts to explain it!!

i was not trying to justify it i know its wrong but many operators are now charging separately for email push services now, its not just nokia messaging, vodafone have messaging service too they charge for.

I don't see why it's unfair to charge for it to be honest. Someone has to run a server that polls your email account continually and then contacts you and pushes the email to your phone. It's not like just setting up an IMAP/POP account on your phone where your phone will go online every 30 minutes and check. Push email gets you a much faster response without the need for the phone to initiate everything, which comes out of your data allowance anyway.

I too am with orange, and I avoided the charge by switching from the Dolphin Plan to the Panther plan. Dolphin gives you unlimited text messages which I never use, Panther gives you a limited amount but still very high, and unlimited push email on Nokia, Blackberry or iPhone.

I also dropped from the 45 variant of the plan to the 40 variant which only gives 600 minutes instead of 1200. Panther 40 is the cheapest plan that includes "unlimited" internet. So in effect I actually saved a fiver a month!

However, tread carefully, I have spent 2 days on the phone to Orange and Nokia trying to get it sorted out because they cocked up my account setup. Nokia Messaging is a new service which a lot of their staff are still unfamiliar with and you need to make sure that the correct bundle is added to your account. Additionally they do not support the N900 and many of their 2nd level techs are refusing to take calls about it.

If you drop me a PM I can give you my details, maybe it will help if you ask them to look at my case notes and tell them you want the same bundle.

The other issue I had was for some reason I couldn't convert my account from trial to full. I had to create a brand new account. This is a Nokia issue, not Orange. Eventually I got Nokia to delete the original account, then recreated it from the phone.

Very true, on Vodafone you have to pay £5 a month for Blackberry email (I forget the name of the package now).

As an alternative just set your mail up directly, I stopped using NM ages ago and now just have my N900 set to check every 8 hours. You can set it much lower than that if you need, but I'm not sure if the email app will invoke a connection on it's own. Mine just seems to wait until a connection exists.

Nokia Messaging system is emulating BlackBerry system with the e-mail, for that reason Nokia no longer provides the Black Berry connection app, Nokia is charging you for the service as well as your service provider, think of this like paying for the Black Berry service... but in your nokia... (THAT SUX BIG TIME LMAO)

Why do you say it is ok to pay for the Blackberry Internet Service, put that paying for it with Nokia, "sux big time lmao"?

If you get on the right service plan with your phone provider then your provider pay Nokia for Nokia Messaging, just the same as if you get on a Blackberry plan with them then they pay RIM for BIS. Only real difference is the Blackberry version has been around a lot longer and thus they have had more time to fix the bugs in their service.

Do you think the infrastructure and servers that provide the Nokia Messaging service come for free or something?

Sorry to bother you Nokia Messaging Warrior (lol), it does sux, because if we wanted an e-mail phone, we would get a BlackBerry, since the n900 e-mail client is very bad paying for it doesnt make it worthy, and you dont have BlackBerry PIN, you have ovi sh**it, sorry ovi contacts, which almost only you will have LAMO!

But if you want to pay for it and you think is worthy, go ahead do it, im not stopping you, at the end you are the Nokia Messaging Warrior.

PS. Dont take it personal

All I use it for is to get timely notification of my emails, and for that it works just as well as my old company provided Blackberry did. (I had plenty of problems with BIS too! )

The advantage of the N900 over the Blackberry is that you don't look like a sales douchebag as soon as you get the damn thing out of your pocket.

If you don't want an email phone, then don't pay for or use Nokia Messaging. At least you'll still have the option to check your email from time to time using IMAP/POP. Have you ever used a Blackberry that doesn't have the proper Blackberry plan enabled? Almost nothing works.
