Err are you sure there is no Skype on Android? I'm positive there is, maybe not as nicely integrated..

According to the skype site, 'skype mobile' is available for many android devices. It seems to support calling as well (though I didn't do much research).

I wrote no skype for galaxy S

and actually there is no skype on the android market guys...

from what I saw, they only make it available for specific carriers in the US

and I think you have to buy it

when they say "many android devices" they probably mean like 6-7and on specific networks

the Galaxy S is not one of them. the Desire is not either i think.

It's true that Skype is Verizon only in the US; however I use Nimbuzz which allows me access to Skype. It's free, there's no "buy" to it on that carrier.

But if you're able to use Google; you can find skype.apk and if you have root and the ability to sideload; you can install it, easily. But I swear (Skype) locked it down to just Verizon's network.

Nimbuzz? I will give it a try.

I think it is very likely that skype support will be removed from all 3rd party skype clients on android. They recently removed it from Fring.

Not sure if Maemo will also be a target.

Fring was infringing on Skype's network and whatnot, Skype was pretty willing to deal with them; Fring backed out.

Nimbuzz, IIRC, has licensed Skype. And I'm pretty darn sure that Nokia has licensed Skype, so not a problem there. Maemo and MeeGo are real safe.

Random oddity around Skype though, there's to be no Skype for Windows 7 Phones...

You can also use sipdroid if you have a PBX that can connect to skype to make/receive calls. Of course this is less straight forward than an app that is designed to do this!

I've honestly had very little luck with Sipdroid - but that's not saying much. I probably overlooked a lot while trying it.

I've not used it, so I can't comment, but I'm hoping that it goes smoothly when I get a Galaxy Tab in the coming months. It seems to support very common codecs, and while there are shortcomings, it is reported to have sufficient features to be usable.

What SIP PBX/service were you trying it with?

I have access to Aptela and a Trixbox. If anything - like I said earlier - I can honestly only blame myself for my Sipdroid failures, not the software.

I just need to read more, experiment more, play more. It's not exactly "straight-forward" but it's not that hard either.
