When I bought my 770 last year, I thought: "Wow, this is what I've been looking for all the time. I love it - but its obviously an experiment and there will be no successor, so I'll better take good care of it."

Now, 18 months and one new model later, we're not speculating if there will be a successor; we're following hints on how many additional models Nokia will bring to the market and find it perfectly reasonable to think there could be two, maybe even three within the next months.

Nice.

Yep, a lot has happened since the 770 was first announced. And to think, this is just the beginning.

While we're talking about FM radios and USA/Europe, I just thought of something: When I was stationed in Italy in the 80's, I remember the FM stations there being 50 Khz apart, rather than 100 KHz. In fact, my Sansui receiver has a switch in the back to make it compatible. Further research on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FM_radio) indicates that, while most of the world uses the same band of frequences (Japan being a notable exception) not all use 100 KHz, and not all are on "odd" channels.

So, for our European brethren, how does the Nokia FM receiver work in your country?
Fine. In the UK we use 100kHz spacings, but the N800 tuner tunes in 50kHz steps. So there should be no problem wherever you are.

I've been doing a lot more use of the tablet without using the stylus yesterday and today. D-pad and those buttons, finger keyboard (figured out how to always make it come up (click select in a text box) instead of only sometimes coming up (press my finger into the text box)).

I'm finding that I'm less and less interested in a dedicated hardware keyboard for this thing. I could easily just stick with how things are.

1) stylus keyboard when slow is ok, and I need to see the app while I'm typing.
2) finger keyboard when doing a bit more typing, precision isn't as important (meaning more backspacing is ok), and I don't need to see the app while I'm typing
3) external bluetooth keyboard when I need speed AND need to see the app while I'm typing.

The only exception is VNC client. Unless something changes, I'll be forced to use an external keyboard with it, because the full screen keyboard is just annoying (not being able to see the application while I'm typing, the way it handles carriage returns, etc.). If VNC client supported the stylus keyboard (and I don't know if it supports the bluetooth keyboard, because I haven't tried it), then I think I'd be completely happy on that front.

So, with the exception of that one annoyance, I think I'd rather keep the current form factor than add any kind of physical keyboard (slide out, micro-laptop, etc.).

if they can keep the formfactor, i am all for the slide out keyboard. BUT, here is a big one

if the device has no navigation keypad, no back button, when closed, then it will suck. im lazy, i dont want to open a slide unless i have to. also, the sideways slide like the HTC can kiss my rear...it screws up the flow of the interface. if it slides from the bottom, im all for it.

and it needs more horsepower. it desperately needs more ram, a better video processor, and should not be so shy about creating a larger virtual drive. i try and play videos, it maxes the memory.

it will not take too much more to make it amazing. currently, if paired with a 3g/HSPDA/EVDO phone, it cant be beat. but it can be better. maybe 30% more power overall, and double/triple memory.

I'll agree with the video processor, though this is more a case of it would be nice to actually use what's there if we had drivers (i.e. the IVA).

I'm not so sure about the memory, what kinds of videos are you playing that they fill the entire 128MB of RAM on the N800? I've never seen any problems (no oom errors or apps being killed)?

There's almost certainly nothing wrong with the video processor built in to to the OMAP 2 on the N800 - the problem is the poor motherboard hardware implementation designed by Nokia which has resulted in cripplingly low video bandwidth and the total lack of 3D acceleration support in software. The 3D processor also needs NDAs in order to gain access to the programming documentation, which is nuts.

The new device could have the best video processor in the world, but if Nokia screw up the video bandwidth again and don't ensure there is any kernel support or use video processor hardware that needs an NDA to program it, then they may as well have not shipped a video processor at all.

I think a bit more RAM would speed up things a lot. It would probably also use more battery power, but that's a price I'd be happy to pay.

Twice as much CPU power would help even more with page loading times, application startup, video playing and responsiveness everywhere.

Then all we need is a faster video bandwidth so that we can play full-resolution videos, a somewhat accelerated OpenGL and a touchscreen sensitive enough to handle finger dragging and light tapping. Then we can play with some nice graphical iPhone-like interfaces.

That would be a lot of fun
