I did a test before and considering I'm pretty rusty after being so used to Swype (I forgot where " and ' were -.-') I pulled around 55wmp so I'm guessing the maximum I'll ever get is around 70, I'll do another test tomorrow.

Never tried programming on the N900, always something I've wanted to try but I'm so often in front of my comptuer or have my laptop on me it hasn't been required.

On the other hand, some (notably Lcuk) have reported sitting in airports writing and testing code for the N900, ON the N900. So it can be done. There is even a C++ compiler out there, and of course other languages too, such as Python and (less common here) Ruby.
I wrote the graffiti wall using my n810 at linuxtag and spent numerous time on trips hacking code together on it.
I rarely actively code using the n900 keyboard for coding now though!!

/me gets back into the habit

I have N900 and one of the reasons I chose this device was hw keyboard.

My usual speed is about 120-150 spm.
