go to App Manager then "Download".

There is a library of applications there developed by the community. Alternatively try "Ovi Store".

Unlike the symbian counterpart, you must install the app on the device itself. You can download the installation file for some apps (.deb file) and then run it from the device. if you go this link:

And you click on "install" the installation will begin. Do all this with the built in browser. Over time you will see you rarely need your PC at all.

You can download apps from repositories via the program manager on your phone or you can also download the *.deb files on your pc, transfer them to your N900 and install them with commands like "dpkg -i INSERT_YOUR_DEB_HERE" in the terminal.
You need rootsh (an app to get root access in terminal) from extras-devel, which is a repository you need to enable first, for the manual method, though

Don't worry, once you get the N900, it will be pretty obvious.
There is an Application Manager, which does exactly what you ask for.
