Is it possible to make an old-fashioned datacall to an analogue modem with the N900?

Preferably with a terminal interface?

Thanks

When the usb-host project is finally ready, then theoretically you should be able to connect a usb modem to the N900 and use minicom to dial.

While that would be great when that completes. I think (and Bristoldave) it would be awsome to not have to have a land line to dial into a modem, and be able to use minicom as the terminal interface.

Is it totally out of the realm of possibility to have software do the "modem" negotiation and such?
so, like...the modem answers @ the other end, and software takes over the Speaker and Microphone portion of things... it does a connection to minicom after it connects, and you have your TTY to a modem through the GSM service.

Am I crazy or what?

The modem on the other is presumably connected to a landline. Can you think of a way to interface to a landline without a landline?

Edit: I suppose you could bypass the landline and use a very long serial cable. But if you're doing that you might as well get rid of the modem altogether.

That is what I was wondering. Do you think it's possible to do a GSM call to a landline modem?

I'd be surprised if you can't. Phones 10 years ago seemed perfectly able to make (and recieve) analogue data calls. Normally this required a connection to a PC but the Nokia Communicator didn't need to.

I know analogue modems are dying out but they still have applications.

Ah, GSM CSD call, yes. I used to do this ages ago using a clunky Motorola L2000 and my Psion 5. Back in those days I had to get the operator to enable it. Do operators even support this anymore? (it's incredibly slow, takes up "a whole line" and hence you'll be charged by the time (and not by amount of data)).

Anyway, if your simcard/network/n900 supports CSD then you could try fiddling with minicom and one of these serial ports:
Code:
crw-rw----    1 root     dialout  249,   0 Sep 26 22:57 ttyGS0
crw-rw----    1 root     dialout  249,   1 Sep 26 22:45 ttyGS1
crw-rw----    1 root     dialout  249,   2 Sep 26 22:46 ttyGS2
crw-rw----    1 root     dialout    4,  64 Jan  1  1970 ttyS0
crw-rw----    1 root     dialout    4,  65 Jan  1  1970 ttyS1
crw-rw----    1 root     dialout    4,  66 Jan  1  1970 ttyS2
crw-rw----    1 root     dialout    4,  67 Jan  1  1970 ttyS3

Is minicom available for the N900, perhaps through Easy Debian?

Has anyone been able to successfully complete a CSD call using the N900? This was a really easy process on some older Motorola phones.

minicom is available...I think extras or extras devel (if you install it, it will mess up your n900...disclaimer aside)

I am trying to figure out minicom. Found this online that helps with the instructions a bit.

http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l...l1_minicom.htm

-> terminal
-> root
-> Minicom
-> CTRL + A
-> d
up and down arrows work
-> e (to edit the entry)

After editing I had to do a "clear and reset" from the Top Menu of Xterminal for the changes to take affect. The "Enter" key did not save the data.

No success yet. Hope someone else can pick it up. Work and Fam come first.

Even setting aside the lack of a software modem for the N900, I suspect GSM audio codecs may play a large role in the success or failure of this idea. For instance, dial-up and Faxing over VoIP is always hit-or-miss, but the choice of audio codec used for the connection does strongly affect one's odds of success.

With VoIP, you often have control, or at least influence, over which audio codec your connection uses. With GSM, you're at the mercy of your provider. Should you be lucky enough to connect via Full Rate, your dial-up connection might go through. More likely though, you'll be connecting via Adaptive Multi-Rate, and you'll be sunk.

I believe that's what kureyon was suggesting in saying you'd need your carrier's assistance in this.
