Had this problem, solved it by leaving the phone on AC charger a few hours, when I came back It was charging (orange flashing led).. The phone however needed a FIASCO flash before it actually stopped working oddly.
In my case, I sometimes got to see desktop but kept on randomly rebooting.. As soon as I got the battery charged, I just enabled flash mode and reinstalled the firmware, preserving the emmc. all has been good since then.
No i can`t see the 4 dots ... From the boot ... Just the white backround and the Nokia Loggo after that restart! I must buy a new battery to verify the problem with low level voltaj ...

when u were at the mall , did u try the new battery yourself after verifying that it is fully charged , or just took the store's keeper word for what the problem is ?
please try the battery yourself.. and if possible while at the store , bring your laptop and try to flash the phone if it doesn't start maemo , see if it goes into flashing mode .
if it isn't the battery , then is probably NOLO is acting funky...
what did u do exactly ??? if the battery dies during normal use , this doesn't happen .

When i was on the store i try it a new battery and i have the same problem ... I was in the same day with the phone in a service phones store and they can`t flash ether my phone... Now i send the phone to a Nokia Service ...
The steps I followed when I had my problem were as follows, just in case for you to try before sending the N900 to service..
Remove battery, leave it at least 5 minutes.
Insert battery
Plug the AC charger. At this moment, chances are that the orange led light will turn on, remain lit (not flashing as usual). Leave it like that for a few hours.
Eventually, the LED will start flashing, It will be like that forever (will not reach green status), so remove the AC charger connector after a couple hours.
Don't turn on the phone, use the "U" + USB connector method to flash the phone.
Flash the FIASCO image, reboot the N900.
At step 2, It is possible that no LED color is shown at all in your N900. If that's the case, remove battery again and leave the phone with no battery at all again for a short period of time..
