Hi people, I have a problem and I don't know how this happened but suddenly my N900 does not type the characters accordingly with the keyboard, for example when I try to type an "?" the char I get is "&" when I press the "!" I get an "(" and I don'w know how this happended :S the characters menu displays different characters options than I got before.

Does someone have a clue about this?

Thx.

I only have a mild clue ... did you somehow change the keyboard layout to one used in a different country? (e.g switched to Polish/ Scandinavian/ Swahili keyboard or some such). You might want to download one of the "modify your keyboard layout" apps and specify your keyboard (even if it's something as banal as English-USA keyboard) and hopefully that will work.

Otherwise you might want to consider modifying /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/nokia_vndr/rx-51 (which on my N900 is the file controlling the keyboard layout, although there are a few other files in that directory, too).

First thing I would do is go in the Settings, Text input, and select whatever your keyboard layout is supposed to be (even if it looks like it's already selected). Save the settings, test.

If that works, great, if it doesn't, reboot. Test. If it doesn't work, try either the ukeyboard thing or modifying the file C.Whiteham suggested - though if you modify a part that you don't have selected in the settings, it won't actually have any noticeable change until you select the layout you modified.

I was having problems with the symbols of my keyboard (Alt-Fn) and also my hildon-input-method which was taking way too much CPU. Another thread on this forum showed me it was FastSMS which was causing the problem. Just deinstalling fMMS fixed my cpu usage and a reboot also fixed my Alt-Fn combo.

It might not be FastSMS for everyone. But I would check apps like this 1st.

Hope it helps someone.

Edit: Still occuring.... :/ So it's not just fMMS. I will look into it further and keep this thread updated. A friend has the same problem so I'm guessing it's a quite common problem. And the worst is ofcourse that because of the CPU drain the phone is empty in no time...
