If the USB port was still attached to the board, but the board itself tore apart (which seems to happen in most cases?) they can't reattach the USB port, because the thing to attach the USB port is gone, so they need a new board which means new phone.
I took the phone apart before i sent it in and it seemed rock solid i used a magnifier to look closer and it seemed fine, but then again i am no expert.
Well my usb port adventure began 3 days ago, with loads of dissapointment and frustration, when I picked it up too briefly with charger plugged in.. Brought it to a store today and they said they would ship it to nokia for repair.
Note that the nice lady wrote down specificly that nokia confirmed many N900's have this HW problem after I explained what I had researched. Could last up to 3-4 weeks, will be tough but I cranked up my thrustworthy N95. Hopefully they will admit this goes for the factory warranty, I also brought the loose port whitch will be transferred to Nokia with my phone. (luckily it didnt damage the chip partially as read somewhere).
Will report when I heard more about this, any news on how pricy this repair could turn out to be (europe) if Nokia does <[edit] rude?>
Well finally restored my settings and apps to my new N900 and all seems ok.
AIMED AT NEW USERS
It is worth doing a backup from time to time and store the backup file on your phone memory card, pc or memory stick.
It saved a hell of a lot of setting up, it restored all apps, phone settings even email settings within 25 mins.
The only thing a think i need to setup is the sixaxis controller because my new phone will have a different bluetooth address.
Apart from that all seems ok..................cross fingers.
OK, this finally happened to me today
I have been looking but I cannot find a link to where Nokia have admitted the problem. If anyone could reply with that I would be eternally gratefull. thank you
Then I can print that off and take it to the Nokia repair people, just incase there aer any arguments. They were OK before when replacing the kickstand ( I am sure it arrived in the box with that broken).
Is it true that all the date will need to be wiped, including the emmc? If that is the case then I will need to somehow bluetooth all of the data to my wife's laptop. That could take HOURS, and drain the battery, and I only have a very painful method of chargin the thing now.
Nokia do not fix the usb. So you better back up. Maybe some Nokia Care Points may do so but Nokia do not. They just give replacement devices. I have been waiting for a replacement for over a week but Nokia have no idea when they will have one for me.
After over a half year the micro USB charger is now stopping and starting charging randomly. Nice to wake up with empty battery.
Thumbs down Nokia, luckily fast Nokia repair service is just around the corner. It is now in repair service and I am waiting msg when the repair is done or do I get new one.
