Hallo my frends, just wondering i installed Extra Decoders Support but still the media player cannnot seem to play these files. what could be the issue. obviously i upgraded my firm ware to PR 1.2
same thing happens to me, and sometimes the .avi files don't work though this is very seldom, it says the audio codec blah blah blah is not compatible.
Provided you have restricted codecs installed and use apt-get:
root -> apt-get install mplayer
cd folder_where_file_resides
mplayer name_of_file.mkv
Terminal, yes. I was not able to get it to work in the regular video player but for me mplayer is fine as my gf is spanish and loves to watch with subs enabled and mplayer allows just that from the command line.
I think it is mainly dependant on the codec that is used to compressed your video files... I honestly have no problems with .avi files at all. But 720p .mkv files is something that the N900 cannot play... Gotta wait for the N9 for that :P
But im pretty sure the N900 can/could play 480p .mkv
N900 can`t play videos with higher resolution then its display i.e. 800x480. With mplayer you can downscale it, but you will see slideshow due to the high CPU utilization of the downscale process.

Better to use ffmpeg from commandline to downscale and re-encode the file, before playing it.
