Is there a way to modify the resolution of the video?

I mentioned that since android 2.2 the HTC desire has 720p video recording. so i was thinking couldnt it be possible to fix this on the n900? the resolution of the sensor is big enough to record 720p video. and with some over clocking it should be possible right?

anyone any idea why this hasnt been done yet?

camera is capable but OMAP3350 isn't.
CPU and RAM isn't enough to make N900 rendering 720p not to mention recording it.

OS also not capable to capture a smooth frame rate even with just 840x480p. 720p is may be only happened in the dream. We can kiss 720p good bye. Nokia don't planned for 720p on N900.

Maemo5 is a dead OS... well dying to be precise. Total life span is 1yearso far.

there is one way to archieve it and 1080p also: stop motion....

but otherwise you must buy a better device for that, N8 seems to be amazing @720p

I believe the N900 has an Omap 3430, and that is capable of encoding 720p, according to the spec sheet. And according to the results of the Samsung I8910 or SE Vivaz, that also use it.

It is true that the N900 even has trouble at 840x480, but that is most likely due to the disc I/O; framerate seems to falter at bitrates over 4000kbps.

Perhaps (i.e I am only speculating) using FCam drivers, a codec similar to the one of the SE Vivaz, and/or a bigger RAM buffer, or even formatting a memory card with a different file system would work.

the n8 recording 720p videos
with:
RAM:256
SWAP: ---
CPU: 680 MHZ (n900- easy overclock to 1Ghz)
DSP: ---- (or maybe not?)
the n900 have much more than that!

N8 has a much more powerful GPU, more then 2x that of N900.

This is IMHO incorrect. The problem with the N900 not recording @720p is because of the software, not because the hardware. When the device access to the flash, it usually gets stalled, and this is a known problem with the Linux Kernel. The main problem is that Nokia most probably is not going to backport the patches to the N900's kernel, so we will have to wait for Harmattan.
