For me, Sygic crashes constantly and loses signal (may just be my location at times), always seems to happen during a critical part of my trip navigation too lol.. Sygic is useless unless you know of the address you're trying to get to.

I discovered Modrana the other day, and it's decent. I especially LOVE the POI search since it queries google maps.

Ovi maps is a joke. I've been directed to turn down roads that are on overpasses above me, turn down roads that do not exist, and the POI search usually cannot find the most popular locations in the city I live in (Portland, Oregon. A major US city..)

Until Google maps comes to Maemo (i can dream, can't i?), Modrana is my current favorite!

The keyboard problem is known (it "locks" the keyboard), which is annoying. Haven't found a fix yet.
thanks doc....

i cant bear it because when i am driving i need to know that i can rely on it so as to avoid having to grab the phone and start fiddling with it while driving and avoid losing my life in an accident because this program stops working and i have to restart it.

the keyboard lock is unacceptable to me and this whole thread is even more unacceptable since nokia has not made ovi maps available to us n900 users where it is offered for free on even the sh*ttiest phones that they make

what satellite are you using? u use supl.nokia.com and supl.google.com

I'm almost sure it won't fix anything. I have the crashing and keyboard issues too, and while I have no problem getting a lock, it does sometimes lose & fail to regain its lock. Some crashes have even left a background process kicking around that prevent SMM from being restarted & can only be excorcised by opening a shell and typing "killall -9 Drive". Obviously not something you want to do when driving.

See the "Sygic 10 bugs" thread. They're bugs, and I'd be surprised if they were fixed. I'd get comfortable with modrana because the proprietary vendors are jumping off the sinking Maemo ship, but open software still has plenty of future here.

Whenever someone says that application x is crashing and misbehaving and other people tell that it works pretty well for them first thing that comes up to my mind is that someone has forgotten to tell what he/she has installed to their device. Basically IF you have installed
- Devel & testing apps
- Overclocked
- Tweaked system files (theme, memory, font etc. settings)
- Installed app from here as attachement
- Basically installed app from anywhere else than Maemo.org extras or Nokia repositories

Then...hmmm..How this can be said kindly? Read, read, learn, read, try to fix it, if not possible, reflash, try again in factory default device, if problem persist then write here message. Last thing to do so to speak

Merged this thread with two existing threads.

An update on my previous post in this thread comparing available options for Maemo:

(from the modRana thread)

Also consider reading the wiki and updating it as necessary:

Classic example of arbitrary Nokia decision making. Couldn't just fallback to the no brainer of tagging with lat/lon if network isn't accessible, could you Nokia?
MAME: an arcade in your pocket
Accelemymote: make your accelerometer more joy-ful

I haven't tested it yet but Marble seems promising:

Sorry for the delayed response.

It ought to be reasonably easy to run a webserver on the device that takes standard arguments, uses libmemphis to render map tiles, and then send them on their way to Mappero, etc.

Not something that exists at the moment though to my knowledge.

As an aside, Ovi Maps is really rather crap isn't it? I have no idea whether it's supposed to re-calculate routes, but I certainly couldn't get it to do so once I ventured off its recommendation at the weekend (which I disagreed with). Eventually I had to clear the map and re-enter the destination, etc. (with all the fun of the non-responsive text input boxes and failing search backend.) Arrgh is about the only way to sum it up!

So on your PC: if you have ever installed a program marked 'beta', or changed your font settings, then you may not mention that you encounter bugs with any program at all (let alone file a bug report) until you've reformatted the OS?

When I've paid E70 for a piece of software that keeps crashing, I don't expect to be told to reformat my OS by customer support. I may do that if I have a spare device and a lot of time on my hands. But to be fair to Sygic, they haven't suggested that. (You, of course, are welcome to suggest whatever you like )

I know what you're getting at slender, and I agree to some extent. But there can be many differences that would cause one user to experience trouble and another to experience none, besides having installed some app from extras-testing. Even then, the crashes happen for a reason - not because the repo is cursed by magic. The user base of Maemo has a better-than-average chance of figuring it out with gdb, straces, command line output and so on. And part of that process is comparing experiences.

Think about it: if you aren't allowed to file a bug report after you've installed something from extras-devel.... how are the apps in extras-devel going to get debugged?
