Hi there,

I used to own Nokia 5800 (which is symbian based) and my opertor is 3 Australia. I had bought one of their internet packs and as part of the deal I was allowed to make unlimited skyoe to skype for free without counting towards my alloted internet data allocation. Since I have moved to n900 such a facility is not available anymore, everytime there is a skype call it consumes my data allocation.

Not sure what technology is used on Symbian, everytime I (used to )connect to a contact on skype it would dial out a number (+6143000.....) and voice would appear "connecting you now" and then I will be connected to my contact.

Does anyone know if something similar to above can be done on n900, i.e. when I want to contact someone it dials out a number rather than the using my broadband allocation?

Skype is VOIP, and there are two ways of using it. You will always pay data allowance on mobile internet or use wifi, because it needs to use the internet connection. But, you can either make a skype-to-skype call, or use 'skype out' which uses skype credit to ring a number like a normal phone. This is much cheaper than normal calls, especially long distance, but it will still need an internet connection

Make sure you are on a Wifi network when making Skype to Skype calls. That's the only way you won't be charged for your mobile data.

Essentially, 3 has its own application on Android and Symbian that enables the user to make Skype calls without consuming data. 3 announced that they have no plan to create one for Maemo. It could possibly work in NITDroid though.

This sounds more like it, if it is on Android then will it be difficult to port it on Maemo?
Calling 3 customer care will be useless, anyone know their content development team?

or is there an API from skype that could be used to write such an application?

Hmmm, I believe that the Symbian application is in Java. Wouldn't it be possible to use it on the Java emulators (emulator?) for Maemo.

I know very little of development, unfortunately.

I used to have this working when I was using a HTC Touch Pro using Iskoot. This is the information that I used back then to use my free minutes:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum....cfm?t=1036441
Not sure if that still works but on page 21 they talk about skype calling certain numbers to connect the services.
Not sure if any of that is any help but I too would love to see the free skype calls being able to be used on my n900

Cheers
