And anyway we already have portrait mode for calls, browsing and sms what else do you need it for?
Task switching. When I'm reading a web site in portrait mode it is really annoying that it switches to landscape mode then opens the task switcher, then has to switch back to portrait mode when I select another browser window (or other app that supports portrait mode).

That's like asking "what if people walk with their hands?"

The common mode for mobile phones is portrait, because that's the natural way of holding a gadget of that shape/size/weight.

Just try it, you'll find it's the most secure and comfortable way of holding without spraining your wrist.

What the hell is nokia thinking...
Nokia is thinking that Nokia phones [specifically, Nokia phones that aren't getting MeeGo for free as a late lifecycle update] will have a lovely UX layer on top of the reference system and thus consumers will see that there's more value in buying a MeeGo phone from Nokia than the average non-Nokia MeeGo phone. Much the same as HTC was thinking when they created TouchFlo, SenseUI, etc. Made other Windows Mobile 5+ cell phones look bad.

A non news. I thought Meego supporting portrait mode was obvious from the screen shots posted on the Meego site months ago?

You can run any application you like in portrait mode...

Yeah its strange for anyone to get a phone they want to use in portrait when all text-entry is done in landscape.

Even if you spin all apps around to portrait, you will always have to enter text with the phone sideways.

I don't get this "landscape only" gripe at all.

Not if someone implements a decent portrait virtual keyboard, as seen in Opera for example but system-wide.

    well this is awesome!

but i find not using Portrait mode much on a device with a physical qwerty keyboard. even BB's and E-series (i did not intend to mention) are landscapes.

EDIT: i know! when i play towerbloxx its on portrait!
