google sky for android does that very well.... but n900 does not have a digital compass needed to use that software.... that was why i brought my missus a cheap android so i can play with it sometimes 
but i got to say i cannot get used to many android things, like missing physical keyboard, like the fact that applications cannot be terminated until you reboot (google idea to start up apps quicker), like it tries to get your geolocation from wifi instead of just using gps signal... oh well

I'm sure the n97 has build in digital compass (but you need to research it)

Looks pretty cool, but it's useless unless you are settings up satellite dishes or into astronomy.

Having now looked at the apps on the iphone, it would be nice to have on the N900 but sadly without the compass not sure who good or usefel it would be
