I'm not a developer, so I thought perhaps someone who is might have some insight into WebOs. I know that their app store started out pathetically small but there are so many nice apps for the Palm Pre now, including some types that I wish were available for the N900. They have X-Plane, lots of other games, even some fun camera apps. They have all the standard social networking apps but even banking and Netflix, too.

I know the phone isn't all that great, so is it because Palm already had relationships with developers? Or because apps were easy to port from the iPhone? WebOs is based on Linux, so I'm baffled as to why they have lots of apps to buy and we don't - even if it isn't as many as Android or iOs.

And while I am whining a little (and maybe Meego will help the apps situation) I really am curious about how different the dev environment is from Maemo. And if it isn't all that different, maybe I can approach some devs to see if they'd port their apps.

Well, the webos sdk is pretty nice, which is what developers like. That and documentation.

Webos is also maybe alittle more popular in the us. And has al so had carrier subsidization.

WebOS, is surprisingly made on..."web technologies". It's arguably, easier to write applications for WebOS than it is for Maemo.

QtWRT should be out soon if it is not already and that will make it easier to make these kind of apps for maemo/meego/symbian

I did read that they integrated Html, Javascript, etc. but wasn't sure what that meant exactly. API's that use scripting to access the system layer? I've seen how Android does it with Java, is it similar to that?

Ugh. Would be useful if Maemo was built on WRT. It feels like a kludge, as far as I am concerned.

Thanks! I did a little Googling and found this page:

along with a few other pages that made me think I ought to give this a try. I have a little jquery and json experience and a few ideas that just might work... :-)
