Sorry if it's been asked before or if I've missed something really obvious, but I'd like to know if e.g. BlessN900 could be set as the default app when you open the lens cover.

yes it can be, install "camera lens launcher" from extras-devel repository

there is also the dbus switchboard which can do the same for pretty much every app

I don't think that dbus switchboard works that way - last I checked dbus switchboard let you take a file-type and create an association, through some dbus linked voodoo, which tells the N900 which program to open that filetype with. I don't think that the dbus switchboard can create an association for the "lens cover opened" dbus message(s).

The process might be similar, but I don't think that's what dbus switchboard does.

I've noticed the 'run on open' doesn't work, but the app selector works on cover open. Good enough I think for now.
