i had to re-flash my kernel last night...

Instruction here:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_firmware
But below is an overview of my experiences:

To re-flash the firmware (or kernel only), you will need to download and install the flashing utility in a supported environment, see link above.

Windows will also need to install some drivers for your cable to connect to your n900, and this process is where the issues appear most

first advice is if you using a 64bit version of windows then stop right there, it does not work out of the box.
The same If you trying to use a supported OS on vmware (possibly the same applies to virtual pc/windows xp mode) inside a 64 bit host as describved above.

To get this to work, simply move to a windows XP machine if you have one (other 32bit OS might also be fine).

Basically windows will need to install a driver discovered as "update mode" in order for the flasher to work... to get this to work in 64bit OS will be a pain.... in fact i can see my device in my windows 7 64bit but the flashing utility does not seem to see it.... so don't waste your time, use xp if you have one.

After you install the flashing utility, you can open a CMD prompt and start it with the following parameter to detect when the phone is in update mode: flasher-3.5.exe -i

This CMD will just sit there waiting for you to plug-in the phone in "update mode"

How to connect your n900 in update mode?
- make sure the phone is switched off
-- you may need to temporarily remove the battery
- open the keyboard with phone turned off and unplugged
- position the phone so that you can plug in the PC cable while you hold down the U key
- so hold the U key down and plug in the cable
- hold the U key until windows starts to detect the device in update mode and installs the drivers
-- update mode basically shows the n900 screen in white and shows the USB picture in right hand top side...
-- once windows has detected the device in update mode the above flasher cmd prompt should pick it up and report the device details, possibly including current firmware... my guess is might depend on the level of corruption
- once flasher detects the update mode then you can go ahead and flash it as per the instruction on how to flash it.
-- example if you want to re-flash the kernel only with the global firmware, you can do the following in windows:
flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.19-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin --flash-only=kernel -f -R
(parameters are case sensitive)

If you still need more help go here for another post i made on this issue a while back: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=53694

note: updating the kernel only can be used to recover a phone from a situation where the phone cannot start and keeps rebooting, your applications should also still be intact. full re-flash will require you to install your applications again.
