But Samba needs a lot of diskspace and memory.

I cant say something about your copy-error because i never had this problem. Maybe your WLAN-Connection is not stable.
Ahh OK. Its not too much of a problem as I have a mapped network drive using the share. Im inclined to agree about the stability of my wirless network as I have had problems transferring data from my laptop to my desktop.

This programme is truly fantastic and I have been after something to do this for a long while. Much easier for a *nix novice to set up than SSH or any other method!

    I have two DEB-Files.

    tinysmb.deb
    tinysmbgui.deb

    Install steps:

    1. install tinysmb.deb
    2. install tinysmbgui.deb
    3. Setup your Wlan IP in the Config
    4. Add a Share
    5. start the Server
    6. Access the Share from your PC with \\192.168.178.37\
replace 192.168.178.37 with your Wlan IP of your N900

    Here some screenshots:

links to download .deb files are dead!!

very nice! but I got one question though, how about doing it the other way around...accesing shared files in my pc from my N900? because why do I need to use my wifi to transfer files from my pc to my N900 if I can just simply connect it through usb since I'll be using my pc anyway?

Now, it's a different story if you can access your shared files from your N900 from anywhere in your house...other than that it's a great app, thanks!

    @BartA

    both files are in Extra-Devel
I also updated the links on first page.

    @yhe2x

Have a look at Wizardmounter for accesing your pc's shared files from your N900.

You don't need to use your wifi to transfer files. But ...
    - if you lost your usb-cable or you forgotten your cable, tinysmb could be useful ...
    - if you visit friends and you want to share files, tinysmb could be useful ...

If you know something about the linux console and samba you can try Samba 3.5.6 from Extra Devel

Unfortunately, the Samba package from Nathan has missing dependencies and there are no news since february 2010.
Thats why, I have compiled Samba 3.5.6 and created a package called smb.
    (apt-get install smb)

Where to put the smb.conf file (a very simple conf file can also found in that directory):
    /etc/samba

    Start samba daemons (as root):
    smbd
    nmbd

    Hopefully non ASCII-Characters will work
    And also NetBIOS.

    Just try it out.

    Firstly great app

I'm running windows xp, and this works fine using IE8, but I can't connect using Firefox. Firefox is my default browser, any ideas whats stopping it from seeing the share?

i thought i would try this app
i too can see my n900 on my ubuntu 10.10 pc, however
when i click on the n900 ubunyu throws up
"unable to mount location failed to retrieve files from location"
this is done from clicking places > network on ubuntu taskbar.

when putting my local \\my-ip in firefox browser it returns
Firefox can't find the server at \\192.168.2.4

but when i put the ip without "\\" firefox browser returns
    The connection has timed out
The server at 192.168.2.4 is taking too long to respond.

i tried pinging it but there is no response.

after saying this if i stop the tinysmb server then my ubuntu pc
sense its not there and after a few seconds removes it from the list

its a great tool and think its well needed for the n900. thank you
for your time and effort on tinysmb...... its really good
