I know it is not really a major point for the future OS and my question may sound a naive, but with the actual hardware, would it be possble to enhance the handwriting recognition so that it digitizes cursive handwriting?
Could it be comparable to what is found on tablet PCs (or on the Newton )?
For writing emails on the go and for taking note durings lectures... the Nokia sounds really like the perfect system!

    cheers

    Niko

Go bug the developers at Phatware; as long as they refuse to port Calligrapher to Linux, you're SOL (and yes, it is "refuse": Calligrapher comes from the Newton, and if they managed to port the software from NewtonOS to Windows, getting it to Linux should be a doozie).

It appears that Xstroke has a new maintainer who is eager to port his own HWR algorithms into that venerable character recognizer, but I don't see it happen inside the better part of two years...

... and that's about it: Linux has exactly nothing in the field of true HWR.

I guess then that I am not the only one out there looking for some true HWR on linux And yes... my dearest Newton is really old now (and heavy...).

Another request for a better handwriting app... I saw shark on IBM's website and get flashed!!! The present app really sucks :-(
Only tap-tap, for the moment. Anyway, I think that's because Nokia consider it an internet tablet, not a PIM device. That case it would have costed a lot more!

What I would kill for is Decuma.

Looks like they have it for the Sony P series phones. I used to use it on a Clie, and it was great.

Is it possible to replace the HWR module in the Nokia stack with another one? Maybe there are better open-source handwriting recognition programs than the one supplied with the Nokia device...
