I can't add any kind of formatting to a contact number. I tried searching the forums, but couldn't find any mention of it. It's much easier to read a number that's in the (xxx) xxx-xxxx format, to me at least.

Does anybody know why this is? All of my imported google contacts have formatting and I can call them just fine, so I don't know why you wouldn't be allowed to add formatting in the contact editor.

Yeah it's a limitation of the contacts application, I agree that it would be much nicer to be able to add spaces/dashes/brackets (especially as, from what you're saying, the underlying Telepathy libraries can strip them out quite happily before using the numbers)

Add a bug, and/or write a replacement I fear

There's already a bug filed, https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7195, though marked as INVALID.

Well that's disappointing.
