LVTT:

I think I am correct in stating that while charging, the 770 should be considered almost fully on. Go time a boot. Then time how long until you get Charging from an off state. Almost the same.

My Nokia 770 turned the backlight off automatically while last charging. It was the second charging since I got it. While the first charging the backlight was on. I have no idea why it is so. I had changed the turn-off-time to 2 min. but I can't guess this is the reason.

Mine still does not turn off the backlight while charging. Went to sleep with the screen on, plugged into AC, last night -- and awoke this AM with the screen still on.

I don't understand how some people have their screens turn off. How can you tell when the Battery Full appears? (OK, so that's not an issue with an overnight while you sleep charge; but there have been two occasions where I've impatiently waited for Battery Full to appear!)

@ Mike Cane

I think you had that argument before. I would understand what you mean if by turning on the screen (or playing a sound) the device would give a sign that the battery is now fully charged, which is not the case. It just constantly glows for zero reason. If I were interested in the information whether the device charges or not, I would just read the signs displayed on the N770 saying either it is in charging mode or fully charged. The constant backlight is just a function not under the control of the user, that some find useful (like you) while others find it simply useless/annoying (like me). Therefore, from a user perspective an on/off feature would be a good idea. And as Nokia Careline, after asking a technician, said to me that the backlight should turn off automatically, someone at Nokia considered that function and tried to get it under the user's control already. Only, it obviously doesn't work.

Yes, I understand what you guys want. I have no argument. Just puzzled.

Obviously the 770 was done under the influence of phone design, where the screen is on while charging. 770 Mark II should have a separate LED for charging/full charge, I think.

There is a disclaimer in the included 770 manual (and does anyone ever really want to sit around reading some disclaimer?) indicating that to leave the charger plugged in AFTER the device is fully charged WILL injure the battery life.

It makes me wonder if they didn't leave the light on on purpose so you wouldn't try to go to sleep with it plugged in all night, since that would cause damage to the battery life.

It charges back up in like 30 minutes, so there's no need to leave it plugged in, so maybe they did us a favor by leaving the light on?

But yes, you can turn the light off by putting the cover back on. I'm glad I found out about the battery though.... they're $50 to replace, wouldn't want to have to do that often.... heh....

PS: I absolutely LOVE this machine. It's more slick than I expected, and I CAN carry it in my pocket. I can barely use all of the power from the battery in a single day, so I feel most of the complaints are unreasonable, save the one for a larger base DDR than 64 megs. Having a larger swap file built in would have helped a lot.

I don't understand how a modern electronic device with a lithion battey doesn't know when to stop charging. Even the battery icon will stop when it's full. Maybe that instruction is just a throwback left over from the Nicad days?

in my short experiece and feeling:

yeah, i dont like that light being on when charging

one time i might have turned it off wrong and found that the battery was discharge. i had the cover on with the screen on the open side. any one experience this. i thought i had a defective unit or battery. i then charged it with out the cover and so far no problems.

i havent really investigated but how do you know if the screen goes off when the cover is on. are you able to tell

My backlight turns off automatically after a while when charging when turned off or on.

The case is made of metal. When the front of the case touches the screen, a circuit is made and there is a miniscule reduction in the amount of power eminating from the display. The unit is designed to realise by this reduction that the protective case has been slipped on, and thus goes into the wait mode, with screen off and touchscreen disabled.

It's a magnetic switching system. Very cool. Very slick. Nokia gets bookoo points for inventiveness.
