Look at the date. It says 'Sep 21' on mine, which is the date the kernel was built. As this is newer than the release date of the _previous_ firmware, it must be the new one. 'cat /proc/version' is another way of checking the date.
I posted the list of changed files in another thread. Forgot which, but quite a lot of files changed. From casual inspection they didn't seem to have any real significance.
Sorry to bring back an old thread, but there were changes to the metalayer-crawler, which should fix some issues that people have with it.
The only updated file is /var/lib/dpkg/info/metalayer-crawler0.list, and that's in the package installation database, nothing that affects the running of the application. If there were changes to metalayer-crawler they must be in non-obvious places..

The RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.26-8 version mentioned in the bug report (where a libid3 bug was fixed) was the next-to-last release, the last one with the SD/SDHC corruption bug fixed was RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.38-2. There are no additional libid3 fixes in 38-2.
I'm attaching a zip file with a list w/dates of all the files of the root image of 38-2, those who want can simply unpack the zip file and look at the list of files to find the modification date. The list excludes all symbolic links, all directories (not the files therein) and all device files. I.e. only proper files are included, as the date/time of the rest is irrelevant.
Argh, the file is just slightly too big for the .zip file attachment limit.. so I'll put it here: http://www.box.net/shared/zaj5id7dau
The file name is list-of-files-rx34_2007SE_4.2007_38-2.zip
