what you can do is, flash the firmware with USA release !! you will get Skype inbuit in IM conversation .

If you're getting any firmware other than your original one, go with the global one.

tried globle version too ..but the sim was locked in it (there was a red line crosing the sim icon,where the netwrok status is shown)i m using indian version now without skype!!!!!!

non of the n900 available in india are sim locked. try reinserting sim or try some other service provider sim

Are you sure you used the latest Global version? Radio modem is not working when downgrading from 1.2 to 1.1 for example. So it could be your case as well.
