    data plan only needed if going to use n900 for a phone, right?

    I had the n800 years back and I just want the n900 for browsing, media playing, the applications, etcetc. it functions the same as previous devices, yes? in the manner that it still works on wifi and everything.. because I don't want to use it as a phone.

    just checking. thanks for advance and apologies if this is an amateur question

    Yes, you can boot it without a simcard and use as tablet.
    But i think you are not able to use another phone as modem over bluetooth to connect to internet like with my N810.

    ah.. okay. sweet. thank you. if I plug in my AT&T simcard will AT&T think I'm using a smartphone or not be able to recognize? i'm using a sharp FX now which isn't a smartphone-- don't have that kind of data plan.

    Yes it is a smartphone and will make voice calls as well as supporting mobile data. Note however that only 2/2.5G is supported on AT&T though.
