Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else, but no matter the search strings I used, couldn't find something appropriate. The Q is simple: how do you mute the phone speaker in "one click/press/tap", vs going through the top slider, which actually minimizes the volume (which, if within the browser, does not even get accessed easily - i.e. needs browser minimized, to avoid zooming)?

u hold the volume down hardware button, which will mute the speaker. its only one click/press because u hold it down

not if within the browser ... that's zooming out :-(

You can set that option - tap the top bar -> opions -> settings, and change the "Use increase and decrease keys for" setting.

in browser settings you can set whether the volume buttons do zoom or vol (up-down)

thank you all ... still want to use zooming functions in browser ... I was hoping for something like re-assignment of the camera button, for example, which is of not much use if in a browser, or a double-tap, or ... Here is the scenario - maybe it makes more sense of why I am asking for this: browser/ing -> site with flash -> sound starts -> need to shut it down immediately + not loose the option to zoom in/out.

Under what possible circumstances might you suddenly need to mute a website?

when ur watching porn and someone comes and u need to freak out a lil and slow the volume down!!!

If deciding to be such a bozo as to watch porn on a smartphone, then one would expect at least the brains - in an n900 owner - as to mute the speakers before opening the browser ... expectations, of course, are different for the iphone community ;->
