the short answer is in this link
N900-EMMC-loss-and-difficulty-re-flashing
well the guy did only use the additional microSD for swap to get ride of the "not enought memory" problem
but there is a better solution make the auxiliary microSD card replace the internal MMC in fonctionnality
by using the maximum capacity that the N900 can handle (16GB)
and recreating to the best the partitions that where mounted on the internal eMMC
thats the software solution that goes around the problem if you can't get it replaced or repaired
buy a 1GB microSD for the swap solution or buy a 16GB microsd
for a solution that makes your N900 behave like a fully functional one
i'll try this and report back with a fully detailed procedure
