If you've installed a lot, you may free some space simply by running
"apt-get clean".

I just try enter: apt-get clean in X terminal and i get:

E: Could not open lock file /var/cache/apt/arhives/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the download directory

you have to be root for that to work and have the application manager closed:

1 sudo gainroot
2 apt-get autoclean
3 apt-get clean
