sorry for sounding negative here but....

music i get from pirate bay

transfer to my phone is via data cable/mass storage

maps is a joke, sygic gets me everywhere

i use backup on phone and export contacts to memory card

i dont see any need whatsoever for ovi suite and believe money wasted developing the software should have been spent developing more apps for n900, and as for recommended apps and games, are you kidding me!!!

i am a nokia fanboy by the way, but for the past 3 years everything nokia have done has been a pointless waste of time, from the n96 onwards
(apart from this amazing n900 of course)
i would like to see a poll to see who actually gives a damn about ovisuite and the results rammed down their throat

just pleased they have finally listened to us about not releasing the n9 until its actually ready, i think that desision is awesome

I understand your point and guess what, I share most of your opinions.

Nevertheless the best way to shove it up somewhere dark is to point out everything. I participated in the alpha testing and there was a poll if that 3.0 beta should go public, I said never, bring some real improvements or call it 2.something but not 3.0
If this progress version'ing stays like this a 8.0 is needed to get a useful NOS ready. Putting more and more stuff into a "not" working piece of software is a waste and keeps people from using it.

I backup by scripts, the backup tool and rsync to my servers and am faster in backing up and restoring than NOS in syncing my contacts.

There are some real issues in this beta, like with maps, music, contacts, calendar (could say issues with NOS...).

Nokia Management should be ashamed for taking money for the job they do.
Developers are not to blame as they do not have a vote on it.

Chemist, thanks for the update and your honest assessment of the latest NOS.

I'm an N900 end user and for the most part very happy with my phone.....with one exception. Ove Suite.

On average my phone fails at least 90% to sync with ovi, getting contacts from my laptop onto my phone is a nightmare.

Unless ovi have improved the basic sync function I see little point in going for the latest update.

    Has the sync functionality improved?

    Thanks

    JC

Does it work in Linux (Fedora/Ubuntu/Wine)?

    Edit:
Well, tried to install it to Fedora14/Wine, but didn't go well:
"Installation operation failed with error code: 112."
    Stopped in 5/100 %.

I guess I should buy MS-Windows to use Ovi Suite? No way.

What? A suite for a linux phone that you want to work on linux? Why could you possibly want that?

    [/sarcasm]

who doesn't give a damn about ovi should remember it's not made only for n900 and there are other phones.

Yes, it has improved as far as I can tell from previous beta, alpha testing as I do not use the released software in its final state (last beta is final usually).

The syncing does corrupt with additional fields but as far as I know they get not lost but displayed wrong in NOS, back on the phone they are fine.

I tried lately to sync all instances at once as this is the actual case people would like (Outlook-Ovi-Device at once). There was only one double entry and that was because I chose an entry by hand to be another (you get an overview of changes for any contact giving alerts because of mismatches, the previous sync was with NOS 2.xbeta). Calendar is yet to be tested properly.

And to second a previous statement, remember NOS is for other mobiles too.

What is working like expected (afair) although I do not like the way it is handled but that's my personal opinion.
    • SMS sync
    • Images & Video
    • Music (if the item is not 0.00[€,$] in store)
    • Calendar (if and only if Maemo5 supports the repeats and stuff)
    • Contacts (Abook| for most contacts, layout brakes at some additional data NOS is not aware of yet)
    • Maps (new download only, it destroyed the upgrade-index files on upgrade for some reason, maps was still functional on device but with old maps as installed before)
