I am not sure which email client people think is so good on the N900, but Mail for Exchange is rubbish. It doesn't render full html emails. It can't accept appointments and it doesn't send appointments to other people properly. For such a major function (email) this is a major failure. I haven't used the mail client on Android, but could it be worse?
Mapping - there are several apps out there trying to be as good as Google Maps, but aren't there yet. Also there is a major problem with the stability of the GPS driver in the N900. Haven't seen it? Try running one of the mapping programs for five or six hours recording your tracking and you will see what I mean.
What's with the OS getting so slow after you have used it for a couple of weeks, such that you need to format the N900 to get your speed back? May be this caused by MfE, but it is a real killer that OC won't fix.
Stuttering in audio playback.
Lack of specialist/localised apps as stated above.
Voice search
So much hacking is required to do what is basic on many other devices (ie setting voip codecs etc)
Hardware Side
Crap front facing camera. Sure we have Skype video, but the camera is really dark/insensitive.
average n900 user
nerdy in front of a n900 with mouse and kb and xterm open
Haven't quite worked out how to
plug in an external keyboard and mouse yet but the image sounds fitting
UPDATED: This just in -> MOUSE for n900

Notably absent of a spellchecker, of course.
Many of us who actually maintain linux systems might
prefer a penguin dartboard - I know I would.
And from time to time I do sit in front of our mainframe...

- decent app store
- turn by turn voice navigation
- voice dialling
- marketing
- decent PC software (with no bloat!)
- better portrait mode would be good, but not something I miss that much
the only free voice navigation which is not beta, works almost worldwide, and most importantly works offline is ovi maps for symbian unless there is something I'm unaware of. But you can always buy sygic same on all platforms.
________ HOW TO ROLL BLUNTS
i say at this point, because when i got my phone 4 months ago there was no voice navigation, now there is modrana. There was no decent book reader (for my purposes at least) and now there is a heavily modified fbreader. Till last week i basically did not use youtube due to not great apps and the site itself requiring the stylus to go full screen in the maemo browser. Well cutetube seems to have worked that out.
So apart from not having the latest flash (shame on you nokia) what major things is the n900 currently lacking that would be available in android?
I am not trying to start a fight here, i really want to know because i have only spent 5 minutes with an android phone...
third party apps support
DECENT GAMES MADE FROM SCRATCH (THAT ITSELF BRINGS IN third party apps support)
Exchange hotmail setup was done on the very first go on my 5801 Samsung Android device
could not setup exchange in N900 for hotmail still buggy
so actually quite a bit...let me throw in a few small ones. N900 has a chess game I cant even tell the different pieces, and I cant play certain real player apps
