1. I never tried reading books and magazines on it. It does have a PDF reader, but I've only used it for data sheets and things like that. Seems fine for that.

2. Maybe 2-3 hours watching movies, much longer listening to music with the screen off. Several days on standby. I've used it to watch a movie and listen to some music on 5-7 hour flights without running out of battery. It actually has a bigger battery than the N900.

3. Early 2009 maybe? I don't use mine much anymore since I got an N900. I do occasionally see updates of some of the apps, like Media Box.

1. depends highly on the layout and page size of the pdf. And any pdf with many (or high resolution) images may be painfully slow to load.

Personal recommendation: get it, it's an amazing device even now, almost 4 years after its launch. You may want to also invest in a new battery as the original will probably be a bit worn out by now.

It's mostly OK, but rendering can get a bit slow on PDFs that contain lots of large images. Evince is probably the best available viewer.

Very good - with a relatively fresh battery it can last ~4 hours in full use, or several days "standby" (even with WiFi on, as long as the access point supports power saving).

December 2008, but there are also some community-provided updates.

Just my $0.02

With proper encoding video looks great on the N800's screen...

and I'll second the new battery suggestion, just got a new one from Mugen Power, and it has breathed new life into my tablet.
