Hi Everyone. I'm brand new here and a new N800 owner, as of 4 days ago. I immediately upgraded it to OS2008.

I'm excited about the device and its possibilities. Something I really want to get to work is video calling, since Skype with video won't work on it.

I made some good progress, but haven't gotten the video part to work yet. Any help would be appreciated. Here is what I've done and what I get:

I've obtained two accounts at voipbuster.com. I entered the login info for one of them on the N800's Internet Call app, and I downloaded X-Lite on my PC and entered the info for the other account there.

I am able to call between my N800 and my PC. But it's only an audio call. My PC's webcam works with X-Lite, and my N800's webcam shows my image, but once the call happens, the N800's image of me goes away, and my image from my PC's webcam does not appear on the N800.

I WAS WONDERING: IS THIS PROBLEM POTENTIALLY BECAUSE I'M ON THE SAME NETWORK (MY HOME WIRELESS NETWORK) ON BOTH ENDS OF THESE CALLS FOR TESTING? Because the audio works, I think maybe not. BUT...

I also tried Ekiga instead of X-Lite. Perhaps my experience here is illuminating: I can also make audio calls successfully with Ekiga, but when I try to make a video call, I see that on my PC, the image briefly changes from my PC webcam's image of me to the Nokia camera's image of me, THEN THE EKIGA PROGRAM CRASHES! It only crashes when I try to do the video call. The fact that I briefly see the Nokia camera's image of me on my PC in Ekiga gives me some hope. And I wonder if the crashing is again related to me being on the same network on both ends for testing.

I will hopefully be able to test this with my brother in another city, to eliminate the same-network aspect.

Thanks so much everyone!

It's probably a codec mismatch, you pretty much need H.263 support on the PC side as that's the only encoding the Maemo side supports. See also this older thread.

Well, H.263 is enabled on the X-lite. I even tried having only that enabled. I experienced exactly the same problems last night with my brother in another city on the PC end - to eliminate the possible same-network problem. Maybe I should try another SIP provider? Is there a chance that VOIPBuster is throttling bandwidth so video calls can't work but audio ones can?

Also, is there a kind volunteer out there who has video calling working on their PC who will let me try video-calling them from my Nokia for testing and troubleshooting?

I also opened accounts at sip2sip.info, in case voipbuster does not support video calling. I got the impression from sip2sip.info's site that it does allow video calling. A quick try this morning was not successful for video, only audio. The video on the N800 goes out once the call is connected. If I try to turn it back on, it goes back out in a second.

arggghhh!

Is anybody out there?

Out of frustration, I decided to try video calling with Gizmo5. The site is closed to new enrolees at the moment, but I bit the bullet and bought an account from a guy on eBay for $7.50, because, hey, my time is worth something, no?

My question is, will video calling between my N800 running Gizmo5 only work with other Gizmo5 users? The Gizmo5 site seems to say yes. That means I'm going to have to buy another account for my parents to use....arghh.

I am "out there". I am following this thread with great interest! So far, I am of no help to you.

Going back to the original goal for a second:

Another option is Jingle, which should work with any XMPP (aka Jabber) account if both ends have a matching codec. The difference is that the codec negotiation is always done between the clients, whereas with SIP it may be negotiated between each client and the service, and if the service doesn't support the one you want you're SOL.
