Try installing sysklogd (from here) and look at /var/log/syslog* for any hints. Standard disclaimer: you may want to uninstall it when you're done, as it can fill up your root filesystem if you forget about it.
I'm glad some of the classic ITT folks are still around. I couldn't think of anything at the time and just opined. It's good to see some good folks still helping out us N8x0 owners.

It takes about 2 to 3 minutes for my n810 to boot up from battery (NOKIA splash page) but only 15 to 20secs to boot when charger is plugged in. Any ideas??

It's probably starting the kernel and getting the root jffs2 filesystem mounted that's taking time. jffs2 is kinda notorious for long mount times.
~# time mount -t jffs2 /dev/mtdblock4 /mnt/other real 0m4.415s user 0m0.000s sys 0m4.047s
