I have searched different sources and can’t seem to find an answer.

When I create a desktop shortcut the icon appears on the desktop but there is no label (name) displayed beneath the icon. How can I have the name displayed like they way it is displayed in the application menu?

Hmm. hildon-home doesn't have this feature by default. But if you want a real rudimentary way of doing it, install Desktop Command Execution Widget and add one widget for each icon. Just make the commands blank, that way they work as labels but don't actually do anything.

Excuse my crude aligning, I didn't try too hard, but you get the idea.



Another thing you could do is use a program like Inkscape to add the labels to the wallpaper, similar to what I did here to this Half-Life wallpaper, the dock bar on the left hand side isn't actually a dockbar, it's just part of the wallpaper.
