You're probably shortening the life of your N900 significantly by overclocking it like that, but i guess you already know that

Only true if you overclock above 1000Mhz. The Cortex A8 was made to run from 600Mhz, minimum, to 1000Mhz, safe maximum.

There were variants made that were officially spec'd to scale to 1ghz, those included in the N900 are the 550-600mhz variant. Yes most of the A8s in N900 will scale up to 1ghz but not all will.

I don't wanna say you're wrong, but where'd you read that?

I just checked ARM's site, as far as it's concerned, the Cortex A8 is a variant in the Cortex-A series, four variants are available - A5, A8, A9, A15. There's only one Cortex-A8 available on their site, and it says

The ARM Cortex™-A8 processor is based on the ARMv7 architecture and has the ability to scale in speed from 600MHz to greater than 1GHz
It's clock speed is set by the manufacturer - Nokia chose 600Mhz - probably to try to stretch out the battery.

you know the whole reason i decided to customize the conky source was so people wouldn't need to do that anymore... just type ${battery_temp} and save your cpu cycles. you guys are going to get that version eventually so you might as well get used to it
