What exactly is wrong with N900 telephony?

Can you save at least 1500 Contacts? And is it easy to call them?

Nokia better release at least some hints to the n9 at Mobile World Congress in February after their lacklustre presence at CES...

I might want to change my vote to a Motorola after the announcement of the Atrix...

nothing will ever replace my n900 and i doubt we will see any device similar to it anytime soon
but as a new phone, probably the motorolla atrix or the lg phone that uses the same processor as the atrix.

I get 'connection error' all the time when I'm trying to make calls. Using the N900 as a phone is a joke. Ask anyone around here, it's an 'internet tablet' first and foremost.

the n900 lets me admin computers when i'm not in the office download files un zip re zip upload vpn vnc skype calls i cant replace it

long time reader (over a year) first time poster. just had to reply to this one.

i would hope there would be a successor to the N900. by far the best phone on the market. i didnt upgrade from a crusty motorola no spec flip phone for *many* years until the N900 came out. just what i wanted and needed and have not had any issues with it since i got it about 14 months ago. there is nothing you cant do with this device. it handles and looks how a 'smart phone' should, completely logical. it just needs some updated and future thinking hardware to keep in the game and i just wish maemo had a little few more tweeks here and there. it has some rough edges still. i think the problem is that nokia doesnt actually support it. i dont understand how the N900, a one of a kind platform hasnt been marketed like apple markets their one of a kind platform with its apps. seriously with the right backing this phone could have blown up completely... but its not a toy like an apple or an android is.

yes its a little chunky and weighty in the pocket and a one of kind phone... but as i work for a telco, i get to use every new mobile on the market and i swear nothing has come close. the N900 keyboard is the best. hands down. the no crap on the front of the phone, just all screen real estate is refreshing. and nothing beats the ram/storage. even out of the box it STILL kicks every phone out there. 32gb ram is awesome. the IR port has saved me a few times at many places, and has provided some fun too. this has to be on the next maemo/meego device! best browser and handles brilliantly. best contact list and all that it can do with some extra addons. the integration is unreal and why no-one else has come to this level is questionable. proper multitasking....

i recently got to try a HTC Bravo/Desire. slim. big screen, fast, flashy... android. now ive used every android phone and they are all rubbish, an LG came up pretty good (with keyboard) but not good enough. this HTC i rooted and put on cynogenmod which makes android a lot more friendly to doing what you want. really it does help! its a bearable phone now although i feel i dont quite have total control over it. it always seems to be doing something i dont want it to.. so i gave it to my gf. in saying that though.. if i didnt have the N900 i would be pretty happy with the HTC Desire.. although no windows/multitasking apps, low internal ram, no stereo speakers, no skype video calling, no keyboard and not as 'all together' or logical as maemo. android always feels 'limiting' for some reason.

on another note. are there any facts on how many N900's were sold ?

I don't know what would I get next.. I want an even larger screen, preferably a tablet with phone capabilities instead of a phone with tablet capabilities, you know? And I'd really want as much power to do whatever I want to as on N900.

I simply don't know of any such device on the market yet.

I have only had it for a few months,
bought mine imported as it was not even marketed here at that time,
- and already we are discussing tossing them in the rubbish bin

From what I said 5 months ago - I took my own advice

Another n900 to use as a development tool (already did)

and another spare n900 just in case I dropped mine in the water again
(already did that)

two spare batteries


The reality is the Androids (bought one of those for family)
do not even hold a candle to the n900 (yet)

The 'n9' (or whatever it will be labelled) story has not arrived yet
If Nokia pulls a stunt like
locking up the operating system with DRM to satisfy vendors and carriers,
hobbling the phone with various apps that either cannot be removed
or cannot be worked around ' for proprietary reasons'.
and (very likely to occur build a hardware suicide-pill intp the machine
so they or the carriers can unilaterally brick your handset at whim.

Then the reality is the show is over,
and there will never be anything ever as cool as the n900.

Already the store shelves here are empty of n900s,
the official Nokia service center had to borrow a battery from me
to even look at an n900 - the show is over, folks.

There will be phones with f@rt-app stores,
closed-garden phones, virus-me-now!now!now phones,
and all the knockoffs you will ever wish to unsee,
but a phone like the n900 with a community like this one
will be a very long wait into the future.
