Is it possible to compile on the N900 itself? Does Debian run Scratchbox well?
I currently don't have access to my desktop at home.
I'd like to compile usbhostfs, considering the fact we have h-e-n now.

Yes.
You just need to add the fremantle/tools and fremantle/sdk repositories.
One problem though, the development packages are not optified, and will quickly fill your rootfs.
see this thread for copying rootfs to emmc to get more space.
