It might be useful for the OP to qualify the amount of usage, e.g. after using Skype for an hour over the data connection, the phone gets very hot.
I would agree that the N900 can/does get quite warm, after talking on the phone for a while, and 3G usage, long calls with Skype, etc... tends to make the phone work even harder, and get even warmer.
Personally, I hate talking on the phone, and that's nearly the last thing I actually want to use the N900 for... but when I do have longer conversations, I also tend to use headphones, and put the phone down somewhere, rather than hold it against my head/ear for too long.

Wow. People are actually doubting that the beloved N900 could be faulty? There are Nokia fans on this site that's been through 3 phones - all around the microUSB port or something else.
It happens. Put your disbelief aside, assist the man if you can.
OP... man, that truly sucks that you've had some problems.
