The good thing is that you already know that to get the tablet to a decent standard of quality you will have to tweak and play around with it
A lot of people buy the N900 then look into why it hasn't got this and why it hasn't got that and then whinge that they have to do stuff to the N900 themselves to make it a better experience and then start a thread in these forums that the N900 is rubbish and i'm off to buy a lemming-phone.(i-phone)
The i-phone (sorry to swear) comes pretty sleek straight out of the box whereas the N900 (deserved a capital letter) is usable out of the box but lacks the punch other phones have. This is where modding and this excellent community come into place and in time with due care and attention you will turn you're N900 into a tablet which will not look out of place against most of the new phones out there.
and most of all apart from some Ovi store applications every other application you put on you're N900 are free thanks to all the porters and programmers out there.
One last thing,
The usb issue
I had this after 9 months of use had to send it away for repair and they just replaced it. Be careful plugging in and unplugging and read up on this thread below it gives good pointers on how to avoid the loose or faulty usb issue.
I think you should get a low to mid range phone right and wait for the n9 to come, because when its available the n900 will become obsolete in terms of support both of nokia ( which is crappy) and the community, you dont see anyone making applications for the n800. and the hardware isn't getting better.
